Tonight's Cotton Candy Sky Sunset Over Downtown San Diego

Nice pastel sunset sky over part of the San Diego downtown skyline with the San Diego-Coronado Bridge front of it. Shot from Chula Vista Harbor tonight (January 18, 2020). Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 0.3 sce f/5.6 ISO 100 212mm. This is a single frame from a timelapse sequence I shot here tonight. Timelapse to be posted soon.

Traffic On The San Diego–Coronado Bridge Tonight.

This is a long exposure of the Coronado Bridge taken at around 6:33 tonight. I shot this after doing a timelapse here. Single exposure shot with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 60 sec f/25 ISO 100 212mm. I continue to be very impressed with the Canon EOS R. It's far better than I expected and that most of the expert reviews of it. The image quality is amazing: clarity, dynamic range, automatic white balance, low noise at high ISO, the amazing electronic viewfinder, battery life, user interface, and more. The San Diego–Coronado Bridge, locally referred to as the Coronado Bridge, is a prestressed concrete/steel girder bridge, crossing over San Diego Bay in the United States, linking San Diego with Coronado, California. The bridge is signed as part of State Route 75. In 1926, John D. Spreckels recommended that a bridge be built between San Diego and Coronado, but voters dismissed the plan. Construction on the San Diego–Coronado Bay Bridge started in February 1967. The bridge opened to traffic on August 3, 1969, during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of San Diego.

  • Nearly Full Moon Rises Above San Diego

Nearly Full Moon Rises Above San Diego

Tonight's nearly full (97%) orangish moon rises above the Banker's Hill neighborhood of downtown San Diego on January 12, 2020. Appropriate for Banker's Hill, the building to the left with the white & purple lighting is the Manchester Financial building. I believe the mountains in the middle that the moon is rising over are Mount Laguna and/or the various mountains in Cuyamaca. To the right, illuminated in orange, the dome is the Old Globe Theatre and the taller building is the famous California Tower in Balboa Park. Shot with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens at 1/5 sec f/6.3 ISO 800 562mm.

Shot from the Cabrillo National Monument at 5:19 PM tonight January 10, 2020 with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 335mm. Check out the nice reflection on the water. I attended a special evening event at the park where we were allowed to remain in the park past the normal sunset closing time.

The San Diego city skyline at night as seen from the Cabrillo Bridge in Balboa Park with traffic on Highway 163 in the foreground. This is a single frame from a short sunset timelapse I shot here and I be posting later tonight. Sadly the iconic and historic animated red neon sign atop the El Cortez building appears to be malfunctioning tonight.

Friday the 13th Full Moon Rises Over Downtown San Diego

Here's the full moon rising over downtown San Diego on Friday September 13th, 2019. Buildings seen here include the Hyatt Manchester Grand, Marriott, and a portion of Naval Air Station North Island. An airplane - a VERY common item in the sky in downtown San Diego - can be seen in the left portion of the frame. Shot with a Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 1/5 sec f/6.3 ISO 400 388mm.

  • Sunset Sky and Car Trails Over America's Finest City

Sunset Sky and Car Trails Over America's Finest City

I went on another photo adventure with Kamala Venkatesh in Balboa Park tonight. We started out shooting sunset in Alcazar Gardens, but then moved to the Cabrillo Bridge after noticing that the sunset only looked good lower on the horizon. This image was shot with a Canon 6D and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 6 sec f/18 ISO 50 40mm. I used a low ISO and narrow aperture so that I could do a somewhat long exposure to capture the car light trails even though the sky was still fairly light. Highway 163 below and a portion of the San Diego city skyline in the background.

  • San Diego Cabrillo Bridge at Night

San Diego Cabrillo Bridge at Night

Stay Classy. A different angle of the shot I posted from here last night. I decided I liked the previous one better at first, but now I can't decide. This one shows more of the arches of the bridge and more light streaks form the traffic on Highway 163. Which one do you like more? Yellow wildflowers and the iconic Cabrillo Bridge (sometimes called the Laurel Street Bridge) and California Tower at nighttime. This was my first time photographing this bridge for down below. Shot with a Canon 6D and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 15 sec f/14 ISO 200. Wildflowers in the foreground illuminated with a Nichia 219BT LED. The Cabrillo Bridge in San Diego, California is a historic pedestrian and automobile bridge providing access between Balboa Park and the Uptown area of San Diego. It was built for the 1915 Panama–California Exposition. The bridge was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The structure is easily seen from the scenic Cabrillo Freeway (State Route 163), which is located on the floor of the canyon below. Construction of the freeway through the canyon below the bridge was completed in February 1948. However, traffic on the bridge is not visible from the freeway due to the unusual height of the bridge. The height is dictated entirely by the topography of the canyon. El Prado crosses the bridge at the same level as the ground on either end of the bridge, while State Route 163 passes beneath it at approximately the level of the original canyon floor. There is no direct access route between State Route 163 and Laurel Street or El Prado.

I met up with another photographer and shot the sunset from Golden Hill Park and later this bridge. This was my first time photographing this bridge for down below. • San Diego Big Bay Boom Fireworks 2018

San Diego Big Bay Boom Fireworks 2018

Three synchronized sets of fireworks explode over downtown San Diego, California. Shot from over 20 miles away. Weather was perfect for shooting (and enjoying) the fireworks: no wind and nice clear skies. I shot many frames last night, but I really like how the thick smoke clouds add a nice sense of depth here. Thanks again @itwasthelight for always finding the most epic locations to shoot. This is a single frame from a timelapse sequence (video will be posted in the near future) shot with a Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 1 sec f/6.3 ISO 400 484mm.

Full Moon Rises Over the San Diego City Skyline and Hangars at Naval Air Station North Island

Met up with Jeff Morris and Kevin Moto to shoot the full moon rising over the San Diego city skyline. There was no cloud cover to the east, so we were able to capture the moon as soon as it began rising over Mount San Miguel. I shot this with a Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600mm lens at around 525mm.

Partly Cloudy Full Moon Rises Over San Diego

The Buck Moon rises above the San Diego city skyline. This is a composite of two images - I shot one exposure where I optimized for the city lights and another where I optimized for the moon. The clouds surrounding the moon made blending the two images challenging.

I shot this from Harbor Island Park. This is my first serious attempt at doing a composite image. I did one exposure optimized for the city skyline and a separate exposure optimized for the moon. I then painstakingly combined the images to produce this result. Any constructive criticism is welcomed.
