Tonight's Epic Sunset in Del Mar, California

A single frame from a timelapse I shot tonight above the cliffs in Del Mar. I like how the motion blurred COASTER train appears in this frame. And, of course, the colorful sunset. It was a nice treat from mother nature after a very rainy day yesterday.

  • The Sunset Cliffs Sea Cave At Twilight

The Sunset Cliffs Sea Cave At Twilight

This is one of a few photos - plus a short time lapse video - I'll be posting of this cave. Tonight's sunset (February 11, 2020) was pretty boring, but a bit after the sun went down, the blue hour colors weren't too bad. Shot with a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens, this is a five frame HDR blend. My first time ever exploring the Sunset Cliffs. this will be my last communication for a little while as I doubt there's much cell reception inside the cave itself. ☠️⚠️ WARNING: If you decide to visit this location, read up on it first. It is not easy to get to. And you will get wet no matter how low the ride is. Also, know your limits and use your best judgment. While you might make it down to the cave, you might not make it back up top later if you're not careful and don't have a decent amount of strength In your arms. Obviously check out the tide table before you go. Don't stay too long or the tide will come back in and it won't be so fun getting out to go home later. Finally you may or may not have cell reception down below. You have been warned!

Full Snow Moon Rises Over Snowless San Diego.

Tonight's full moon - the "Snow Moon" rises above a portion of the San Diego skyline. The tent-like building in the foreground is the San Diego Convention Center. Shot with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens.

  • Short-Lived Amazing Sunset At The Imperial Beach Pier

Short-Lived Amazing Sunset At The Imperial Beach Pier

Tonight's sunset was a bit different than most. It started out really colorful and saturated about 10 - 15 minutes BEFORE the sun went below the horizon. Then it got mostly boring shortly thereafter. Most sunsets seem to get more amazing AFTER the sun goes down. Sometimes it's as much as 15 minutes later until the clouds get colorful. Shot at the Imperial Beach Pier on February 3, 2020 with a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens.

Sunset At The La Jolla Tide Pools Tonight.

Shot on February 2, 2020 about 20 minutes before the "official" sunset. Not too long after this shot, the sun went behind thick gray clouds and became much less dramatic. Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 1/500 sec f/4.5 ISO 100 29mm. Timelapse coming later.

  • Spectacular San Diego Sunset At The La Jolla Tide Pools.

Spectacular San Diego Sunset At The La Jolla Tide Pools.

Tonight's sunset - like a lot of recent sunsets here - certainly didn't disappoint. I shot this tonight at the tide pools in La Jolla. After finishing up my real estate shoots late afternoon, I took a look at the sky and knew the chances were good for a nice sunset. Shot on January 31, 2020 with a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 1/40 sec f/4 ISO 100 23mm. Timelapse coming later. I chose frame - out over 800 - due to the nice little splash here created by a rogue wave. I was shooting a frame automatically every 5 seconds and I like how things lined up.

  • Tonight's Amazing Sunset At Sunset Cliffs.

Tonight's Amazing Sunset At Sunset Cliffs.

What a fitting name for this location. After doing some real estate shoots today, I decided to head to the coast to shoot the sunset. My original plan was to climb down to the nearby cave and shoot the sunset from inside it (there are a couple of large openings in it), but aftering sizing up the path down there, I figured I likely wouldn't be able to make it back up. I chose to stay up top to shoot the sunset instead. Timelapse video coming later.

  • Starry Sea.

    Starry Sea.

Lifeguard tower and star trails over Torrey Pines State Beach on January 22, 2020. For this image, I used a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens. Total exposure time 50.8 minutes at f/4 ISO 500. I stacked the images using Sequator, but not before spending over two hours removing LOTS of airplane trails from the sky (San Diego gets a lot of air traffic along the coast). Foreground illuminated by traffic on the street behind me here.

Blue Hour Rush Hour Part Two

Rush hour traffic on Camino del Mar / Torrey Pines Road and Torrey Pines State Beach to the left. Sadly, the torrey pine trees in the foreground here appear to be a victims of the bark beetle. :( Shot from a cliffside trail above Torrey Pines Beach at sunset on January 21, 2020 with a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 30 sec f/10 ISO 100 28mm. Torrey Pines State Beach is a coastal beach located in the San Diego, California community of Torrey Pines, and is located south of Del Mar and north of La Jolla. Coastal erosion from the adjacent Torrey Pines State Reserve makes for a picturesque landscape. It is a local favorite among surfers and remains a quintessential Southern California beach. Occurrences of bioluminescence have been noted.

Blue And Gloomy Sunset At Sunset Cliffs.

Tonight's sunset was quite gloomy and not really colorful like a lot of recent sunsets. Still, I like this mysterious tilework on the concrete in the foreground here. Shot with a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 0.5 sec f/5 ISO 100 17mm. Timelapse video coming soon.

Tonight's Spectacular Surreal Stunning Sunset in Ocean Beach.

Awesome sunset on January 2, 2020 in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego, California. I shot these near the OB Pier (which was closed due to high surf). The colors of this sunset continued for over an hour after the sun went below the horizon. Shot with a Canon EOS R at 75mm focal length.

  • New Year's Eve Fireworks at the Hotel del Coronado.

New Year's Eve Fireworks at the Hotel del Coronado.

Happy New Year, San Diego! Shot with my new Canon EOS R. I must say that the dynamic range, clarity, and many other aspects of this new Canon mirrorless camera are nothing short of amazing. Shot tonight (December 31, 2019) from Glorietta Bay. Hotel del Coronado, also known as The Del and Hotel Del, is a historic beachfront hotel in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, California. It is one of the few surviving examples of an American architectural genre: the wooden Victorian beach resort. It is the second largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon) and was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1970 and a National Historic Landmark in 1977. When it opened in 1888, it was the single largest resort hotel in the world. It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities through the years. The hotel has been featured in numerous movies and books.
